Leeds University Union
Leeds University Union is one of the biggest in the country, providing
shops, bars and entertainment for over 28,000 students. Following a £5m
refurbishment, the Union building on the Leeds campus now boasts four
bars, a games complex, general store, bookshop, card shop, print shop,
hairdresser, opticians, travel agent and clothes shop, all of which
offer great student discounts.
On the Leeds campus, the Refectory hosts gigs by major bands, with around four concerts each term. Regular club nights are held in the Stylus bar and Pulse.
Over 150 sporting, political and cultural societies at LUU cater for all tastes. Sports clubs range from hockey and football to more unusual pursuits such as 'korfball' or 'ultimate frisbee'. Students of all standards can take part, although Leeds is also very successful in regional and national sporting competitions.
Whatever your skills or interests, the Union gives you plenty of opportunity to get involved, make friends and gain valuable experience. You could help out on the confidential listening service, Nightline, join one of LUU Community Action's sixty projects volunteering in the local community, become a journalist for the award-winning newspaper Leeds Student or a presenter on the student radio station, LSRfm.
The Union is run by its students and you can take an active role through debates and votes in general meetings and elections. Any student can stand for election to the Union Council or for a one-year full-time Student Executive Officer post.
Many Union services are provided free to students, including counselling and welfare advice, a nightbus and emergency overnight accommodation in the LUU women's centre.
