Town Hall Organ creates Phantom horror

11th Nov 2011
City Organist Simon Lindley performs live organ accompaniment to the silent film The Phantom of the Opera on Monday 14 November at 1.05pm at Leeds Town Hall.

The Phantom of the Opera 1925 film is based on Gaston Leroux’s famous novel and is set in the Paris Opera House about the Phantom’s undying love for understudy Christine Daae. The Phantom is played by the great Lon Chaney described as ‘The Man of a Thousand Faces’ for his infamously gruesome make-up job in the film.  On the film’s release theatres were urged to have smelling salts on hand in case ladies in the audience fainted in horror!

City Organist Simon Lindley is one of Britain’s most popular recitalists and was educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford and the Royal College of Music. He is Organist of Leeds Town Hall and Leeds Parish Church, where his duties include the direction of its famous choir. In 2001, an Honorary Doctorate of Leeds Metropolitan University was conferred upon him in recognition of his contribution to the musical and civic life of Leeds.

This event begins at 1.05pm and lasts approximately 90 minutes. It is completely free to attend and no tickets are needed.

This performance is part of Leeds International Film Festival, running from 3 - 20 November, for more information visit www.leedsfilm.com. It is presented in collaboration with the free Leeds Lunchtime Organ Music recitals presented by Leeds International Concert Season.
