Olympic medal hopeful to prove ‘hit’ at food festival

1st May 2012
A Leeds Olympic gold medal hopeful is set to prove a ‘hit’ at the Leeds Loves food festival in May.

Boxer Nicola Adams from Chapeltown will be unveiling some dietary secrets ahead of London 2012. Fresh from her gold medal in the Stranjda cup in Bulgaria on 26th February, the 29 year old flyweight will also be talking about her training regime ahead of the Olympics.

Nicola will take to the stage on the theatre kitchen on Saturday 26th May at the Yorkshire Post/Yorkshire Evening Post backed Yorkshire Food and Drink Show on Millennium Square.

Nicola will be joined on the theatre kitchen by chefs from Asda, who will be cooking up a healthy fish dish.

Celebrity chef Brian Turner will be showcasing his culinary talents on the theatre kitchen too as he kicks off the proceedings at 11am on Friday 25th with the Leeds Catering Agency,’ Leeds dinner ladies’. Other venues offering up trade secrets, tasty demonstrations and great food for sampling across the festival weekend from the kitchen will include Leeds locals Casa Mia, Leeds City College and Leeds Kirkgate Market, along with famous names such as Harvey Nichols, Brasserie Blanc, Malmaison and Gaucho and Revolution.

Nicola says “I’m really excited to be part of the Leeds Loves Food festival, it will be amazing to meet with Leeds fans ahead of London. Despite my goal to win Gold at the Games, I absolutely love food and am a big fan of the festival. Of course, although I might treat myself a little, I need to keep absolutely fit. I know every opponent will be at their best and so my eating regime is incredibly strict at the moment. It’ll be interesting to see what the people of Yorkshire make of my daily meal plan! The truth is, I'm in a fantastic position and what I put in my body will ultimately generate the best outcome.”

The theatre kitchen opens on Millennium Square at 11am on Friday 25th May to coincide with the unveiling of 112 stalls selling produce from wines, cheeses and meats to chocolate, cakes and juices.

Alongside the hundreds of stalls at the show, the festival, sponsored by Leeds-based supermarket, Asda, also brings together a jam packed calendar of events in major venues across the city. A full list of activities will be unveiled on 2 May at an event at Leeds City College’s Food Academy at Flannels but is expected to include a festival at the Victoria Quarter with demonstrations from outlets including Anthony’s patisserie, Opposite Café and Bagel Nash plus events at The Light, Merrion Centre and Leeds Corn Exchange.

Organisers Marketing Leeds and Leeds City Council have already confirmed that a Moroccan market will take place on Briggate from Wednesday 23 May – Sunday 27th May  as well as a series of Global Food Markets at Leeds Kirkgate Markets to showcase the diverse range of international foods on offer at Leeds Markets, with a special focus on the culinary traditions of the countries coming to Leeds this summer to prepare their teams for the Games: China, Russia, Australia, Canada and the Netherlands.

Cath Follin, Head of City Centre Management and Markets, Leeds City Council, said “Leeds has much to be proud of, not least its great sporting credentials and its vibrant food scene so it’s fantastic that we have managed to combine both by securing Nicola to talk at the Yorkshire Food and Drink Show. I’m sure that during this exciting Summer, visitors to Leeds will get behind Nicola and enjoy hearing from her about how she is preparing for London 2012.”
