Leeds film kicks off

Highly anticipated film The Damned United launched in cinemas across the UK last week. The film, which tells the darkly humorous story of Brian Clough's doomed 44 day tenure as manager of Leeds United, shot at locations around the region last year. Screen Yorkshire supported The Damned United through its Production Fund and provided locations and crewing support.

Based on the best-selling and critically acclaimed novel by Leeds-born writer David Peace, The Damned United was adapted for the screen by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon), directed by Tom Hooper and stars Michael Sheen as legendary opinionated football manager Brian Clough, with Timothy Spall as his right hand man and only friend, Peter Taylor. Jim Broadbent plays Sam Longson, Chairman of Derby County.

Leeds had previously been managed by Clough’s bitter rival Don Revie (played by Colm Meaney), and on the back of their most successful period ever as a football club, United had an aggressive and cynical style of football - an anathema to the flamboyant yet principled Clough. Taking the Leeds job without trusty lieutenant Peter Taylor by his side, and with a changing room full of Don's boys, would lead to an unheralded examination of Clough's belligerence and brilliance over 44 days.

The Damned United is a Left Bank Pictures film, supported by Screen Yorkshire through its Production Fund, in association with BBC Films and Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Red Riding
The long-awaited dramatisation of David Peace's cult Red Riding novels for Channel 4 hit television screens earlier this month. The series shot at numerous locations across the region in 2008, with Screen Yorkshire supporting Red Riding through its Production Fund, and helping with locations and crew.

Mark Addy, Sean Bean, Paddy Considine and Peter Mullan are amongst the phenomenal cast that are set to star in Tony Grisoni's (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) adaptation of Red Riding for Channel 4 in association with Screen Yorkshire and Lip Sync.

Grisoni has adapted three of David Peace's four cult noir novels into a trilogy of feverish crime thrillers set against the backdrop of Yorkshire in the 70's and 80's - a time of fear, distrust and the Ripper murders. The films also boast an impressive list of directing talent; top film directors Julian Jarrold (Brideshead Revisited), James Marsh (Man on Wire) and Anand Tucker (Hilary&Jackie) make a rare move to the small screen to put their own spin on these dark tales of greed, corruption and abuse of power.
