Taking a taxi is one of the most convenient ways to travel around the Leeds area. With door-to-door service it is a fast, efficient and safe way of travelling to your destination.
Taxis in Leeds are required to display an illuminated ‘TAXI’ sign on the roof of the vehicle. Taxis are black and white, and charge fares using a regulated meter - they are sometimes known as Hackney cabs. These can be booked in advance or hailed on the street. Taxi fare rates are regulated by the council, and taxis must display a rate card in the vehicle. Additional charges are often made for luggage, late night travel, extra passengers and travelling on public holidays.
There are taxi ranks throughout the city, including the main transport hubs: outside Arrivals at Leeds Bradford International Airport and at the south concourse of Leeds City Train Station for instance.
Private hire cars do not display a sign on the roof of the vehicle. They must be booked in advance by telephone - private hire cars are not insured to carry passengers if they are not pre-booked. They do not have to use a meter to charge fares, and prices are not regulated by the council. If you are staying in a hotel, the reception will be able to recommend a number of reputable local firms. You should always agree a price for your journey before you get into a private hire vehicle.
You will find telephone numbers for a selection of Leeds taxi and private hire companies below. These firms are all licensed by Leeds City Council.
As with any major city, there are some illegal 'pirates' driving unlicensed cars, so be careful. If you experience public nuisance problems concerning taxis or private hire vehicles, contact Leeds City Council's Taxi and Private Hire Licensing Department on the telephone number below. Complaints about taxi/private hire vehicles should include the date, time, location, company and vehicle number if possible.
