St Johns scoops top accolade at Leeds Retail Awards
3rd Oct 2011
Last night the St Johns shopping centre received top recognition at the Leeds Retail Awards, walking away with The Outstanding Contribution to The Environment Award.
Projects like the centre’s quarterly eco-friendly kids club aim to encourage the people of Leeds to support and take an interest in their local community and environment. B:Club is an award-winning kids club that is part of the St Johns’ B:Responsible campaign.
In order to reinforce the importance of recycling and being green, St Johns has a nominated eco-guard who liaises with the retailers in the centre on all environmental issues. All recycling in the centre is recorded so that progress can be measured, and St Johns aims to beat targets each month and is always looking for new ways to increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste tha
t goes to landfill.
Staff are encouraged to walk or cycle to work, or in instances where staff live further afield, car-sharing opportunities are available.
Denise Jeffery, Centre Manager at St Johns, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to walk away with the award for The Outstanding Contribution to The Environment. Recognition like this makes the projects and initiatives we run really worthwhile, and emphasises the obligation we all have to the environment and planet.”
As well as this, independent music shop, Jumbo Records, which has been in the St Johns shopping centre since its opening in 1985 received the award for Best Music Store.
