Speculation means publication for Leeds Trinity graduates

12th Dec 2011
Just months after graduating from the BA English and Writing at Leeds Trinity University College, four aspiring authors have seen their work published in a new anthology of speculative fiction.

The four debut authors are Neil Faarid, Robin Moran, Peter Wolfe and Alexander Skye. Their work has been published by Elsewhen Press in the anthology [Re]Awakenings: An anthology of new speculative fiction, a collection of genre-spanning stories including fantasy, science fiction and the paranormal.

Alexander has four stories in the anthology, including the science fiction story Dreaming Mars which was his final year writing project. He says he has his mother, writer Alison Buck, to thank for getting his work published – as one of the original contributors to the anthology she recommended his work to the publisher.

Alexander said, “The English and Writing course really helped with my writing on a technical level - I didn’t have to change my writing style all that much, but it certainly helped me express myself better.”

“It was really satisfying to read out preliminary versions of Dreaming Mars to the class and have people actually like it.  Most of the class were not sci-fi fans, so being told that they liked my writing regardless was a real confidence boost.”

Paul Hardwick, Professor of English at Leeds Trinity, said, “The way the English and Writing Programme is structured is very much about developing the breadth of students' writing, but also - particularly in the final year - supporting the pursuit of individual writing interests.”

“Although it is a very new degree programme, our graduates are already producing some exciting work. We're absolutely delighted to see four of our 2011 graduates in this collection and hope to read much more from them in future.”

[Re]Awakenings is currently available in digital format and will be published in paperback next March. The publisher, Elsewhen Press, is a newly established independent publisher of speculative fiction, which will publish titles in digital and print editions, adopting a digital-first policy for most publications.
