Leeds student to analyse speed bumps

7th Aug 2012
A post-graduate student at the University of Leeds is researching speed management in 20mph zones.

The profile of 20mph zones is rising across the UK as more local councils implement them. Vehicle speed has traditionally been managed using speed bumps, however they pose problems for buses, emergency vehicles and the general public. Consequently, the speed management of 20mph zones is changing.

Despite the use of techniques such as speed bumps, 38% of the time vehicles are speeding in 20mph zones in Leeds. This indicates some degree of public disagreement with a 20mph limit.

Georgina Floyd, a post-grad student at the University of Leeds, is gathering public opinion about 20mph zones, why speeding occurs and how speed is managed.
