Leeds fashion designer flies high with Ryanair and LBIA

25th Aug 2010
Talented Leeds fashion student, Mandy Hudson from Wortley has been given a flying start thanks to Ryanair and Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBIA).

The 23 year old graduate from Leeds College of Art was chosen to create Ryanair’s signature look for Ladies Day at The Ebor Festival, York Races.

Ryanair and LBIA asked designers to produce a dress design that reflected the spirit of the airline. The former Wortley High School pupil came up with a portfolio which impressed the judges with its fun and vibrancy.

Ladies Day is one of the highlights of the fashion calendar in the region, with designers competing to create the most eye-catching outfit.

Mandy’s passion for fashion came from her mum who worked as a seamstress in a Leeds clothing factory.

Mandy said “I used to watch my mum make our clothes at home when I was small and knew that I wanted to do that one day. It’s great that Ryanair has given me this opportunity to create a new look for them.  I based the style on shape of the plane wings whilst at the same time creating a very feminine and elegant silhouette.”

The short blue and yellow dress is complemented by a one-off hat with a Ryanair plane perched on top.  The dress will be worn by Leeds model Louise Birkhead.

Laura McCormack of Ryanair said; ”This is Mandy’s first commission since graduating in July and we are delighted to give such a talented design student support at the start of what looks to be a promising career. We chose this design as it matched the energy and vibrancy of our brand.”

Tony Hallwood of LBIA said “As Yorkshire’s Gateway airport we are pleased that Ryanair decided to show their dress for the first time at such an important fixture in the region’s racing calendar. We are committed to supporting inward investment in the region and promoting flagship regional events with our airline partners.”

Ryanair launched a base at Leeds Bradford Airport in March of this year with the following routes: Alicante- Barcelona, Carcassonne, Dublin, Dusseldorf (Weeze), Faro, Fuerteventura, Gdansk, Girona- Barcelona, Ibiza,Knock Ireland West, Krakow, Limoges, Malaga, Malta, Montpellier, Murcia, Nantes, Palma, Pisa and Venice Treviso.

Laura McCormack added; “Only Ryanair sells Europe’s lowest fares with a no fuel surcharge guarantee. In addition to our lowest fares we also deliver Europe’s No1 on-time performance across more than 1,100 routes. Passengers can book our £8 seats for travel on over 500 European destinations in September. These seats can only be booked until midnight this Thursday (19 August) and are sure to be snapped up fast so we urge passengers to book them on www.ryanair.com before they sell out.”
