Leeds and Bradford in food cook-off
Leeds City College is pitching in to help the city celebrate its love of food this week by setting up stall in Briggate.
The College, which is renowned regionally and nationally for its culinary arts and food manufacturing provision, will be taking a mobile market stall into the city centre in collaboration with Kirkgate Market as part of this year’s Leeds Loves Food.
Leeds Loves Food, a food lovers’ festival, runs from Thursday (July 1) until Sunday (July 4), with a jam packed calendar of events.
The stall, which will be open 11am-3pm, will showcase the diverse range of fresh, local produce on offer at the market and college chef tutors will be handing out recipes to help shoppers create quick, easy and tasty dishes from the ingredients available on their doorstep. Passers-by can also sample some of the delicious goods made on-site at the College’s Thomas Danby Campus, including artisan breads and a range of new deli products.
The College will also be highlighting the culinary talents of its staff and students with cooking demonstrations in the specially erected kitchen in Briggate.
At noon on Saturday, one of its chef tutors and a student are pitted against counterparts from Bradford College for a special cook-off. Each college team will receive the same mystery bag of ingredients and challenged to cook up a tasty dish within an hour before the audience and special judges declare a winner.
The College cook-off is part of the celebration of the forthcoming Yorkshire Cricket Mela celebrating cricket, culture, community and commerce in conjunction with the hosting of the 2nd Test Match between Pakistan and Australia at YCCC, with a return heat to be held later in the month at the Ministry of Food in Bradford.
Staff and students will also be taking part in various demonstrations in Victoria Quarter as part of the four day festival.
Hospitality and Culinary Arts Curriculum Manager David Sowden said: “Leeds City College is delighted to be involved with Leeds Loves Food again, giving a taste of what the College can offer in regarding to training and provision for this key sector in the city as well as letting people sample some of the actual goods produced on-site by our talented staff and students.”
