142 year old family business relocates to new premises
13th Aug 2012
A 142 year old family business that has been based at the Merrion Centre since 1970 has relocated to a new shop in the shopping centre’s indoor mall.
Scheerer’s Music, which was established in Leeds in 1870 as John Scheerer&Sons, is one of oldest music retailers in the north of England.
Simon Reynolds, whose great grandfather established the business, said: “Leeds is a city rich in musical traditions and our family firm has been very much part of that. My great grandfather, John Scheerer, came from Bavaria and through his contacts was able to import very high quality instruments. In addition, he hand made tambourines, whistles and triangles to sell in the shop. These days we sell most types of instrument including brass, woodwind and strings, with a full range of accessories . We also specialise in drums and hardware, acoustic and classical guitars. The new shop will allow us to broaden our range further and attract new customers.”
Helen Beckett, Associate Director at Town Centre Securities who own and manage the Merrion Centre said: “Once again we are delighted to have been able to accommodate Scheerer’s Music shop within the Merrion Centre. This is their third shop here and as their business has evolved so has the centre. Scheerer’s Music is a highly regarded and popular retailer which is very much part of the fabric of the Merrion Centre. The new prominent position inside the mall, with increased footfall, will help widen their customer base and we hope encourage more people to take up an instrument and discover a new talent.”
Scheerer’s Music also has an on-line shop at www.scheerersmusic.co.uk.
