Cardboard City at the University of Leeds
20th Oct 2009
On Saturday, 24 October,
from 10-5pm, the art gallery at the University of Leeds is running two
free family art activities about ‘Our Changing World,’ part of the
nationwide initiative 'The Big Draw'.
The most ambitious is to create a giant 'Cardboard City' throughout the Court of the University’s iconic Parkinson Building, using recycled cardboard boxes. But the Gallery needs help! People of all ages are invited to contribute their old cardboard boxes and to help build and decorate the cardboard city throughout the day. Old pieces of cardboard will become houses, buildings or vehicles in this fantasy city. (For those diligent enough to recycle their cardboard already, the Gallery has plenty of extra boxes saved up so that everyone can have a go!)
The second activity uses archive and recent photographs of famous Leeds buildings, and invites people of all ages to draw their vision of how these sites should develop in the future.
‘Our Changing World’ activities at the Stanley&Audrey Burton Gallery are free, family-friendly and open to the public, with no need to book.
The Big Draw is a month-long season of drawing events for people of all ages and abilities. 2009 is The Big Draw's 10th year running. Over 1000 venues will use drawing, painting and a vast range of other media to connect visitors with museum and gallery collections, urban and rural spaces – and the wider community - in new and enjoyable ways. Events are taking place throughout October in galleries, museums, art clubs, heritage sites, parks, libraries, archives, science, community and shopping centres, colleges and schools across the UK, and internationally.
Stanley&Audrey Burton Gallery spokesperson Layla Bloom said: ‘This is the Big Draw’s 10th birthday year, so we wanted to celebrate with a splash. Having local families take over the University’s Parkinson Court with their imaginative vision of the Leeds of the future seemed like a great way to do this. Even our youngest visitors are becoming aware of recycling and climate change, so we’re excited to see what creative solution everyone comes up with! ‘
The Gallery previously won a ‘Drawing Inspiration’ award for its Big Draw activity ‘Drawn Together’ in 2002. For more information about Gallery events, please visit www.leeds.ac.uk/gallery/events.htm .
