Angling for attention at Granary Wharf
Visitors to the third annual Leeds Waterfront Festival have a new location to add to their route as the recently completed Granary Wharf development joins in the fun this year. Over the 17 and 18 July, the historic canal side will be buzzing with sessions on angling, demonstrations of canal art, food and drink workshops and a packed schedule of bands and musicians.
ISIS Waterside Regeneration, the developer behind Granary Wharf, is bringing the waterways back to life and the development boasts newly restored graving docks as well as facilities for visiting boaters making it a key destination for boaters across the north. Over both days of the festival, keen anglers or those eager to just have a go will be invited to join free angling coaching sessions with professional angling coaches on the Leeds Liverpool Canal, visitors can sign up on the day, or for those interested in life on the water, regular talks on the practicalities of buying or hiring a barge take place on the Saturday. Canal boat artist Pat Osborne, who was recently artist in residence at Standedge Visitor Centre, will be demonstrating her considerable canal art skills throughout Saturday.
Food and drink is never far away at Granary Wharf. Throughout the weekend City Inn staff will be on hand with a cocktail masterclass (Saturday) and explaining the art of afternoon tea (Sunday) in the elegant Granary Lounge which overlooks the waterside and offers a stunning outdoor terrace. The Hop has an outside international bottle bar, complete with tasting host and at Wasabi Teppan-Yaki, sushi fans can learn how to make their favourite dishes. Sweet toothed visitors are also well catered for with chocolate workshops from the Ministry of Chocolate and a cup cake masterclass.
Adding to the atmosphere, local and regional musicians and bands will be playing throughout the weekend. On Saturday the Foxwood Steel Bandits will be performing throughout the afternoon and a host of live acts will take to the stage that evening in The Hop while on Sunday, the outdoor stage features live acoustic sets from Hannah Trigwell, Limetree Festival and Laura J Martin among others.
Regenerated by ISIS Waterside Regeneration and directly south of Leeds Railway Station, the recently completed Granary Wharf development has already benefited from the launch of two residential buildings, Waterman’s Place and Candle house; Leeds newest hotel, City Inn, and a redeveloped public realm. Now home to a regular pannier market during the summer months and a destination for those keen to enjoy the serenity of the water side or the independent hostelries; Granary Wharf is the new kid on the block but has already established itself as a significant spot in the city.
