Leeds College of Music is the UK’s largest music college, with over 1,000 full-time and 2,000 part-time students. It is a College of Higher Education, and is the only specialist music college in the UK to offer both Higher and Further Education courses, enabling progression from BTEC National Diplomas to degrees and postgraduate study.
Courses are available at all levels in Jazz, Classical and Popular Music and Music Production, as well as Musical Theatre courses at National Diploma and Foundation Degree level and a new MA in Community Music.
The College is situated on Quarry Hill, Leeds’ arts and cultural quarter where neighbours include the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Yorkshire Dance and performance venue The Wardrobe. The College occupies a specially designed building – the most modern music college building in the country. This includes rehearsal and recording studios, teaching and practice rooms, library and learning resource centre, a recital room and a café-bar. A new award-winning extension provides four floors of additional teaching space and on-site accommodation for around 200 students.
The Venue, the College’s state-of-the-art 350 seat performance space, opened in 2003. Situated in a multi-million pound development above the regional headquarters of the BBC, The Venue is the home of the College’s annual concert season and Leeds International Concert Season’s lunchtime and evening chamber music series. The College’s Concert Season features a wide range of music from classical and contemporary to jazz and world music, and everything from duos and trios to big bands and full scale symphony orchestras. Details of Concert Season events and seating plans are downloadable from the website at www.lcm.ac.uk.
Although its full-time courses attract students from all over the world, the College has strong links with the local and regional community. The Access and Outreach Department provides community-based projects, individual tuition and part-time evening classes, which are enjoyed by thousands of people every week. The College has very close links with the neighbouring SAA-uk (South Asian Arts UK), and Leeds International Concert Season. The College is a partner in the FuseLeeds and Leeds Lieder + festivals, and runs international education conferences in Jazz and Music Production.
