The world's most dedicated fan? Probably...

25th Aug 2010
The curtain will soon be raised on a new play to dramatise the life of one of Leeds United’s most devoted followers. Gary Edwards, from Kippax, has missed just one game since 1968, and now his amazing journey is set to become a stage play this coming autumn at a site-specific venue at Clarence Dock, Leeds.

Successful books, ‘Paint It White’ and ‘Second Coat’, outline the adventures of Edwards, a painter and decorator by trade, who has followed the infamous club to the four corner flags of God’s own pitch. Along the way he has been divorced, shot at, run over and robbed. Away from the sport, the play illustrates the pitfalls and highs of dedication, passion and loyalty.

Paint It White (On The Night) follows Edwards’ life story and is full of humour, glamour, friendship, travel, romance and action. Basically an insight into a hobbyist taken to the extreme. It’s a travelogue; a road movie for the stage without a tax disc.

Author, Gary Edwards said: ”There were so many stories from all over the world I am quite excited to see how it will look on stage. I understand Brad Pitt wasn’t available for the part so I’ll have to make do with the next best thing.”

That next best thing is Leeds-born actor Gary Dunnington who plays the lead role of Edwards. LAMDA graduate, Dunnington, is no stranger to the ups and downs of Leeds United having been a fan of the team all his life, and has been acting for over twenty years appearing in TV, theatre and film including roles in Coronation Street, Casualty, and Sharpe’s Challenge with Sean Bean.

Actor, Gary Dunnington said: “I’m looking forward to playing the part of Gary Edwards as it’s about Leeds people and set and performed in Leeds. It’s been a long time since I have done a show in the city and am relishing the prospect.”

Producer, Les Rowley, said: “It is only fitting we give this play the professional acting to match Edwards’ professional pursuit. In any other sphere Gary Edwards would be a Prime Minister, a Diplomat or a Royal Navy Commander. His story is remarkable and hopefully we can bring to life aspects of the book that has endeared him to both literary and sporting worlds.”

The play, Paint It White (On The Night) will open at the Clarence Dock (Unit 32) on Wednesday 6th October and run for just 15 performances until the end of October. Tickets are available online (paintitwhite.co.uk) or on the door priced £10. Call 0113 216 3681.
