White Rose raises £100,000 for Martin House
15th Dec 2011
White Rose Shopping Centre and Martin House Children’s Hospice have a special reason to celebrate the Festive Season this year – as they have already exceeded the fund raising target they set themselves, more than four months ahead of schedule.
Centre Director Peter Cook said: “When we adopted Martin House as our centre charity in 2010, we set ourselves a target of raising £100,000 in a two year period, but I am thrilled to say that we have already exceeded that amount with four months still to go and money is still pouring in.
“We have always known the staff and customers of White Rose and all the retailers are generous people, but they have really got behind our campaign to raise money for Martin House and we would all like to say a heartfelt thank you.”
Events to raise money for the second oldest children’s hospice in the UK, which is based at Boston Spa, included two indoor Santas on the Run events and the Big Little Car Raffle to win a Peugeot 106.
Christmas shoppers were entertained by carol singers from nine primary schools from across south Leeds to add to the funds, and money has also been raised by the sale of scrap metal collected from retailers and from donations shoppers have made to the Wishing Well on the Upper Court at White Rose.
Martin House Corporate Fund Raiser Carol Devine said: “It costs more than £4.5 m a year to simply keep Martin House running, and we have to raise most of the money ourselves, so the help that everyone at White Rose has given us has been invaluable and made a real difference.
“The money raised by the Big Little Car Raffle alone was enough to pay the salary of a nurse for a year, so I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped to raise such a wonderful amount of money.”
