Sports student honoured as Olympic Torchbearer

22nd May 2012
Emma Jones will take on the honour on Wednesday May 30, after being nominated by Cheshire West and Chester Council for her volunteering work assisting the Boughton Belles Netball Club.

The 20-year-old who is currently coming to the end of the second year of her degree in Secondary Physical Education at Leeds Metropolitan, said she was “thrilled and excited” about her upcoming duty as an Olympic Torchbearer in Chester.

“My old PE teacher set up a netball club when I was at school and I got involved in it by coaching some of the teams,” said Emma, who has continued with the coaching despite now living in Leeds whilst at University.

“I travel back and forth between Leeds and Chester so I can keep it up,” commented Emma. “I still take responsibility for the four to six age groups and am also the club’s fundraising officer.

“I couldn’t believe it when I found out I’d been chosen to be a Torchbearer, it is such an honour and I’m really looking forward to the Olympic Torch celebrations and I’m delighted to be a part of this history-making movement.

“We get to keep the torch and the tracksuit that we’re given to wear for the Torchbearer role which will be a brilliant memento to have from the experience.”

The Olympic Torch Relay will showcase the whole of the UK – from dynamic urban cities to areas of outstanding natural beauty.

Torchbearers will carry the Flame through more than 1,000 cities, towns and villages throughout the country.

Emma will run her leg of approximately 400 meters with the Olympic torch from Chester Racecourse on the morning of May 30.
