Historic Leeds bar looks to the future
24th Jan 2012
The historic John T’s Bar on Boar Lane, which is part of the Marriott Leeds Hotel, is to undergo an exciting £500,000 transformation this spring.
This familiar Leeds landmark, which first opened as the Trevelyan Temperance Hotel in 1871, will re-open on 12 March 2012 as 1871 Bar&Lounge, creating a stylish new destination for discerning drinkers and Leeds taste-makers.
Major changes to the space include a new entrance to the bar on Boar Lane and a contemporary re-modelling of both the bar and restaurant – which will become a Midtown Grill – on the ground floor of the hotel.
Located at 4 Trevelyan Square, the home of the Temperance Hotel until its closure in 1918, and next to the famous Dyson’s clock building, this architectural icon of old Leeds will be transformed into a comfortable, elegant and contemporary new venue.
1871 Bar & lounge will feature a freestanding centre bar, new seating and standing areas and a vibrant new colour scheme. Historical Leeds artefacts, such as the original Otto Langen & Crossley Brothers of Manchester patent atmospheric gas engine of 1871 (one of only three in existence) which Dyson used to lower and raise his window displays, will combine with contemporary furniture to create a blend of old and new, and a cosy, artistic atmosphere.
Open from 11am, 1871 Bar & Lounge will offer a light bite menu in the morning, and a simple yet innovative menu of small plates, healthy options and traditional, locally inspired fare during the day. In the evening, signature cocktails will be served alongside a selection of craft beers. The ambience is anchored by state of the art lighting and sound staging.
Also undergoing refurbishment is the Marriott Hotel restaurant, which is becoming a Midtown Grill steakhouse.
