Anthony's grows green

19th Apr 2011
Anthony's Chef and Greenhouse resident Connaire Moran, cooked up a 'Green' feast this weekend as local residents and tenants revamped Greenhouse's communal allotment space as part of 'growing green' - a community project set up by sustainable developers Citu.

Keen gardener and Anthony's Chef Du Partie, Connaire Moran, joined his neighbours on the day as residents cultivated the land and planted new produce whilst getting to know each other. They all worked together and got involved with the neighbouring 'greenfingered' community in Beeston, discussing tips and techniques, to ensure the allotment remains thriving for future residents in years to come.

Citu provided the tools and all waste was composted to ensure sustainability ran throughout the day.

Connaire moved into Greenhouse, the UK's most pioneering low carbon development, last month, after being impressed by the money-saving, environmentally friendly features of the development and was completely bowled over by the 189m2 allotment space that it boasts at nearby Ladypit Lane.

He immediately became involved with the 'Growing Green' project set up by Citu, which on Sunday 17th May brought together residents and office tenants to clear the overgrown land, refurbish and decorate the shed and plant new produce in what will now be a communal allotment managed entirely by residents and tenants of Greenhouse. Composting bins were also built using waste wood found on the land.

Connaire kept the 30 budding gardeners refreshed with leek and potato soup made from the produce grown within Greenhouse's courtyard and also used herbs grown there to marinade meat for an evening BBQ.

Anthony's CDP Connaire Moran said: ““Being a keen gardener and chef I'm very aware of the importance of growing fresh produce and it's great to be part of something with other residents at Greenhouse, as it really feels like we are part of a community both internally and on a wider, local scale. Greenhouse is the perfect choice for a more peaceful option to city centre living with the balance of a very short walk into the city, and the tranquility of the countryside.”

Fraser Stride, Director at Citu, said: “The atmosphere was fantastic with a massive turn-out and a real sense of coming together as a community – something you don't always see in city centre living. It really connected the residents and offices who worked together, with a very hands-on approach, to ensure the allotment area was ready for planting and maintaining.”

“One of the ladies from a neighbouring allotment took the time to talk some of the residents through the best ways to maintain and cultivate different fruit and veg and donated some of her surplus for the residents to plant.

“It's really hitting home how much we can engage the local community as well as our own community of residents and office tenants, which has gone above and beyond our initial expectations of how well everyone would interact.”

Greenhouse has 172 Apartments and 15,000 sqft of office space. For more information about living or working at Greenhouse visit www.greenhouseleeds.net or contact richard@citu.co.uk
