Ben Johnson looks into the wide variety of higher and further education available in Leeds
Leeds has been named as the UK’s best university destination by The Independent 2004/05, and the most cost effective place to study in the RBS Student Living Index 2007. So it’s no surprise that there are nearly 200,000 full and part time students at the city’s universities and colleges.
University of Leeds
The University of Leeds is one of the UK’s most popular, offering the widest range of courses in England. It also has a proven track record of providing graduates for the region’s employers, with one in four finding a job at a company with a Leeds postcode.
As one of the country’s main centres for postgraduate studies, the university welcomes around 5,000 postgraduate students from the UK and nearly 100 other countries. Famed for its research labs, extensive libraries and excellent computing facilities, it is recognised as one of the top ten research institutions in the UK, attracting around £70m of funding each year with departments undertaking crucial research of national and international importance.
The university’s Knowledge Transfer Unit displays the institution’s forward thinking approach as they promote new ways for the university to build partnerships with the business world. In the past 18 months, the university has filed more than 60 patents, developed 23 Knowledge Transfer Partnerships with local companies and incubated 45 companies founded by undergraduates.
