John Thorp's Vision

The Renaissance Framework for Leeds, developed by Leeds civic architect John Thorp MBE, was presented and investors at MIPIM 2008, in Cannes.

Presenting the framework, a unique approach to place making and urban design, John Thorp showcased the eight key principles which are used to shape development and regeneration activity in Leeds.

The key principles set out in the framework provide a guide for developers, architects and urban designers when presenting planning applications. They focus on:

  • Connectivity - helping to support and reconnect areas and communities surrounding developments;
  • Green - minimising environmental impact and enhancing green space, particularly in the city centre;
  • Covered - revival of the grand Victorian and Edwardian arcades unique to Leeds, with covered streets, winter gardens and new arcades;
  • Waterfront - regeneration of the River Aire and Leeds-Liverpool Canal to encourage access to and increased usage of the waterfront;
  • Cultural - locating cultural buildings within the fabric of the city to ensure that they become embedded as part of the city's life rather than isolated icons;
  • Skyline - preserving and developing the unique skyline of the city and adding to this with iconic structures to ensure that tall structures enhance the topography and infrastructure of the city rather than detracting from what is already unique;
  • Viaduct - using viaducts and underpasses to help re-connect urban spaces;
  • Reconnected - making physical links to neighbourhoods cut off by infrastructure designed for industry rather than people.

The framework is grounded in a detailed analysis of what makes Leeds unique and what makes the city work as an urban environment.

Leeds civic architect John Thorp commented: "Many other UK cities are experiencing unprecedented levels of regeneration but while others have focused on landmark developments and iconic buildings to differentiate themselves, it is the city-wide approach to long-term sustainable development that makes Leeds unique."
