Overview
Mark Gorenstein: Conductor
Dmitri Alexeev: Piano
Mussorgsky: Night on the Bare Mountain
Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No 2
Tchaikovsky: Excerpts from The Seasons (arr. Gauk)
Shostakovich: Symphony No 9
Since winning the 1975 Leeds International Piano Competition, Russian pianist Dmitri Alexeev has gone on to become one of the world’s most highly regarded artists – “one of the most remarkable pianists of the day” (Daily Telegraph).
Prokofiev himself performed as the soloist in the premiere of his Second Piano Concerto. Notable for the terrifying difficulty of the piano part, the concerto horrified audiences with its at the time modern sound, although today it is widely regarded as a bravura masterpiece.
