From glass act to class act... as Kaisers top first Academy bill
The Leeds Academy opens tonight with city favourites Kaisers Chiefs topping the bill.
And it will be a double homecoming for drummer Nick Hodgson, right, who used to work as a glass collector in the historic Cookridge Street property.
The Academy has a 2,300 capacity over two floors after a £4.5m refurbishment – making it the city's largest permanent live music venue.
The sell-out concert comes two days after the band was named best live act in the Q Magazine awards.
It also marks the start of the quintet's UK tour and the first formal outing for tracks from their third album, Off With Their Heads.
From 1992 to 2000, the 120-year-old building was home to the Town & Country Club and it was during this time that Nick collected empty pint glasses.
Popularly known as 'The T&C', the site re-opened as Creation nightclub in 2001 only to shut in early 2007.
It was taken over by the London-based Academy Music Group, which runs Academy-branded live music and club ventures across the country.
Those due to appear at the Leeds Academy before the end of the year include Primal Scream, James, The Last Shadow Puppets and The Pigeon Detectives.
Tonight's support are The Late Of The Pier and The Hair. For more details click on www.leeds-academy.co.uk
