Leeds opera singers win top award

The Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society has won a prestigious award for its recent production of Ruddigore.

The Leeds Civic Arts Guild award for best musical 2008 was presented to the society at a special ceremony at the Carriageworks Theatre. The awards recognise the best of amateur theatre in and around Leeds.

Leeds G and S Society last won for its production of The Mikado in 2003.

Society member Matthew Stirk also won the award for commitment in a non-performing role for the support he gives to the society, LIDOS (the Leeds Insurance Dramatic and Operatic Society) and Children's Theatre.

G and S society chairman Janet Johnston said: "We felt that everything came together perfectly for Ruddigore."

The ceremony was a tribute to a long-standing member of the Civic Arts Guild, Tony Hoyland, who died last Christmas. As well as being guild vice-chairman, Tony stage-managed many of the Gilbert and Sullivan, LIDOS and Children's Theatre productions.

Tomorrow, the G and S society will perform a selection of favourites at St Matthew's Church, Chapel Allerton, Leeds, at 7.30pm. For tickets – £10 (£7 concessions, £3 students) call 0113 268 0600.
