Multi-million pound Leeds leisure centre plans

Council bosses are calling on people to help shape a new leisure centre proposed for Holt Park in Leeds.

A public meeting at the current Holt Park Leisure Centre will discuss plans for a new multi-million pound complex including a swimming pool and gym.

The project would be funded through the Private Finance Initiative, where private businesses provide the backing to construct and maintain new public facilities.

This method is already being used for the proposed new leisure centres in Armley and Morley with funding of £30m, and the Government has now indicated further funding may be available for a new facility in Holt Park.

Government officials have invited the council to submit a bid for extra cash.

Should the Leeds bid be given formal support, the council will be informed how much money is available and will then be asked to put forward an outline business case of what they would look to build with the funding.

Coun John Procter, executive councillor for leisure, said: "We were absolutely delighted when we were invited to apply for further funding to create another possible brand new leisure centre in Leeds alongside those which are set to be built in Armley and Morley.

"It is highly encouraging that all the hard work that has gone into the Armley and Morley projects has clearly been recognised by central Government, and as a result they may want to give us additional funding.

"It is very early in the process but the opportunity to provide a state-of-the-art superb new leisure centre in Holt Park would be a tremendous boost to the local area and would also add to the exceptional leisure facilities we already have in the city."

The public meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 14, from 6pm to 8pm.
