Leeds 'compost clinics' in battle to boost recycling awareness
Help is at hand for people in Leeds who want to learn more about recycling vegetable and plant waste.
"Compost clinics" are being held across the city until Saturday to mark Compost Awareness Week. The events aim to encourage and raise awareness about the importance of home composting organic waste and the vital role it plays in reducing the amount of food waste sent to landfill.
Garden and food waste make up a third of the contents of most black bins in Leeds.
When squashed under all the other waste, organic waste can not break down properly.
Instead it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.
Residents are invited to come along to the clinics where council recycling education and awareness officers will be on hand to give advice and practical support on home composting from getting started to producing the ultimate compost.
Today's clinics will be at:
- Milner Road Household Waste Sorting Site in Yeadon from 10am to 12pm;
- Calverley Bridge Zero Waste Sorting Site in Calverley from 2pm to 4pm.
