Overview
“Empirical are exciting, joyous and honest. Great material exquisitely executed and beautifully produced – infectious and refreshing!” – Clare Teal
The last few years have been amazing for this talented and exciting young band. In 2007 Empirical won Jazzwise Album of the Year, the inaugural EBU/European Jazz Competition at the North Sea Jazz Festival and The Peter Whittingham Jazz Award, and this year so far have been awarded Best Ensemble in the 2008 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. The band is also nominated in both the Best Band of the Year and Album of the Year categories of the British Jazz Awards.
Their long awaited debut album, produced by Courtney Pine, is a great showcase for these five stars of the future who are dedicated to maintaining the roots of traditional modern jazz, but also with a definite finger on the pulse of the contemporary world. Style-wise Empirical have drawn comparisons to Ornette Coleman, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane and Ali Farka Toure – performed with an abundance of youthful energy!
