Founded in Chicago in 1946, the Fine Arts Quartet is one of the most distinguished ensembles in chamber music today, with an illustrious history of performing success and an extensive recording legacy. The programme includes Shostakovich’s autobiographical Eighth String Quartet written in 1960 when he was, according to friends, suicidal following his diagnosis of serious illness and reluctant joining of the communist Party.
