Overview
Joseph Conrad’s novel is the most famous evocation of the savagery at the heart of the exploitation of the Belgian Congo.
Less familiar are the amazing compositions which Belgian sculptors were encouraged to craft in order to promote Belgian ivory.
Featuring an imposing portrait of the man behind this bloody trade - King Leopold II – along with some of the most significant sculptures of the time, this study exhibition examines the dualities of this episode.
