£300,000 new look for Otley marketplace
Work is to begin on a £300,000 improvement project for Otley's marketplace.
The work by Leeds City Council will include the lifting and re-laying of the square's traditional stone setts.
New benches, signs pointing to local attractions and an information board are also being installed. New CCTV cameras have already been put in place.
The first phase of paving work was due to begin today and will be completed by the end of October.
The second phase will see paving work on Market Street begin in January. Shops and the markets will remain open throughout.
As part of the scheme disabled parking will be relocated from Market Place to Kirkgate, Boroughgate and Manor Square.
The market square is at the heart of the town's retail centre. Every Friday stalls pack the cobbled square and spread down both sides of one of Otley's main thoroughfares, Kirkgate.
Overlooking the square is the Jubilee Clock, installed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the reign of Queen Victoria.
The square is also home to the Buttercross, a pillared roof with seating below for shoppers.
The cash injection into the area is part of Leeds City Council's £13m Town and District Centre Regeneration programme designed to improve town and district centres across the Leeds.
Coun Andrew Carter, executive board member responsible for the Town and District Regeneration programme, said: "We listened to the improvements that local people wanted to see made and ensured we incorporated them in to the plans.
"The result will be a more pleasant, safer place to work, live and shop."
