Take your partners...it's Christian Aid week

Dancers provided an upbeat launch to Christian Aid Week in Leeds as they did the Lindy Hop.

They performed the 1920s dance throughout Saturday at Leeds City station and encouraged travellers to donate.

Every year church organisations stage a host of events across the country which raise millions of pounds to help some of the world's poorest people.

Other events in Leeds include the showing of The Iron Wall, a film about the barrier being built to enclose Palestinian communities by Israel, at the Seven arts centre in Chapel Allerton today (7.30pm); house-to-house collections, sponsored events and pub quizzes.

Christian Aid Week started in 1957, making it the longest-running door-to-door collection campaign in the UK.

Last year Christian Aid Week collectors and campaigners raised more than £15m to support the charity's work in more than 50 of the world's poorest countries.

More than seven million people get involved in Christian Aid Week with around 15,000 volunteers in Yorkshire taking part in door-to-door collections using the famous Christian Aid red envelope.

Hundreds of sponsored events take place around the country.

Christian Aid works in some of the poorest communities in more than 50 countries, where the need is greatest and regardless of religion.

Donations can be made at www.caweek.org or by calling 08080 005 005.
