Leeds students get help to survive exam stress

Help is at hand for stressed-out students thanks to a new survival guide.

Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust, which runs mental health services in the city, has teamed up with Leeds University Student Union to produce an Exam Stress Survival Guide.

The guide, which includes tips on reducing anxiety and stress and numbers to call for extra support, has been handed out at Leeds University Union.

Richard Winspear, post traumatic stress coordinator at the trust, said: "Stress and anxiety are a normal response around exams and a level of anxiety may be helpful in motivating us to study.

"However when this gets to a degree that might affect performance and functioning, then it can be helpful to speak to somebody.

"Too much stress can be overwhelming and impede us from being able to study well.

"It is crucial that students do not allow pressure to build too much before seeking help."

Lizzie Fellows, welfare officer at Leeds University Union, said: "Exams can be a really stressful and difficult time for some people, but these handy guides have some useful tips and advice to help students get organised and prepare for the exams ahead.

"Students should know they are not alone, there's loads of help available and they shouldn't struggle in silence if they find that it's all getting too much for them."

If the pressure of exams is affecting you, contact the Student Advice Centre by emailing advice@luu.leeds.ac.uk or phoning 0113 380 1290.
