Place Your Vote for our Breastfeeding Belles!

Breastfeeding is one of the most natural things in the world - and if you live in Leeds, you’re about to see a whole lot more.

Posters showing mums feeding their babies at various Leeds landmarks will go display in The Light on Friday [May 9], to celebrate National Breastfeeding Awareness Week, which starts on Sunday. [May 11]

The 10 posters, which show “Breastfeeding Belles” in action at places like Tropical World, Lotherton Hall and Kirkgate Market, aim to encourage more mums to feed their children in public.

The ambitious project was the brainchild of Breast Buddies director Kathryn Holme, who thought of the idea after dreaming about her friend, Claire, breastfeeding her son in a ball gown while shopping at the market.

She said: “I woke up thinking that this would look amazing as a photo.

“The main aim of the posters is to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and to promote breastfeeding in public. Breast milk is the healthiest option for both mums and babies, without a doubt.

“Finding the models wasn't difficult as most of them are Breast Buddies volunteers or members of a postnatal group that I help to run.

“They were all excited about the prospect of being involved in such a worthwhile campaign.”

All the photos were taken by students at Leeds Metropolitan University, while the campaign is sponsored by two breast-pump manufacturers, Ardo Medical and Medela. The West Yorkshire Playhouse Costume Collection also provided free hire of the ballgowns.

The posters can be seen on display at The Light in Leeds from Friday [May 9] until May 19.
