Festival on the waterfront

A festival to celebrate Leeds's city centre waterfront is set to draw in hundreds of visitors in June.

The Waterfront Festival on June 14 is being organised by waterside businesses who are aiming to put the river Aire at the heart of the city.

The festival is designed to bring visitors and city dwellers down to the waterside to enjoy an afternoon of arts, culture and entertainment based around Brewery Wharf.

The programme is still being finalised but will feature a broad mix of performances to appeal to all tastes, including jazz, rhythm and blues, street theatre, river cruises and arts and crafts.

It is being promoted by Aire Action Leeds, a partnership group aiming to increase use of the river and waterside.

Project officer Ruth Bull said: "I am delighted with the enthusiasm which this initiative has created, and welcome the idea of a festival which will draw people down to the waterfront.

"The river Aire is as much a part of Leeds as the Seine is of Paris and should play more of a role in everyday recreation – whether for residents or visitors. With all the waterside developments going on, it makes sense that we should nurture it more than we currently do."
