Jane Tomlinson's son's moving speech helps raise £130,000

He's made of the same Yorkshire grit as his immensely courageous mother.

When 10-year-old Steven Tomlinson was presented with an award to honour his bravery, he helped raise more than £130,000 for one of his mum Jane's favourite charities.

Steven is the youngest child of the amazing Leeds fundraiser who despite fighting breast cancer, collected £2m for charity by completing a succession of superhuman feats.

She died last September, after a seven-year battle with the illness.

Last weekend Steven was presented with a Child of Courage award at a gala evening in London held by children's medical research charity Sparks.

The youngster from Rothwell was presented with his award by Princess Michael of Kent, Royal Patron of Sparks, who said he was a remarkable boy.

At the dinner, hosted by Sparks co-president and Leeds television presenter Gabby Logan, guests were moved by a speech Steven made.

The charity's director of communications Paul Connew said: "It was a tremendously moving and successful evening that raised in excess of £130,000 for children's medical research."

Steven was presented with his award by and Princess Michael and Ben Burford, from specialist insurers Stonebridge, which sponsored the award.

"Steven made a moving speech about other children less fortunate than him and got a tumultuous reception," Mr Connew added.

"I'm sure his appearance played a substantial part in the amount of money which was raised.

"Steven is keeping his mum's crusade going and reminds everyone of her so much – the same Yorkshire grit, the same dedication. He is a remarkable boy, as Princess Michael said."

Steven was named the Yorkshire Evening Post's Child of Courage last year and shared this latest award with George Yeomans, a young cancer sufferer who died in January.
