Sh! Awards 2008
There is outstanding new design, digital and advertising talent in Yorkshire's colleges and universities, but all too often, come graduation those designers migrate south in search of work. The Sh! Awards aims to help new designers kick start their career and to keep that talent here in Yorkshire. It is now open to entries from students looking to become the best of the bunch in design, digital and advertising.
The deadline for entries is Friday 30th May with finalists being interviewed by a judging panel made up of some of the leading creative and design heads from agencies in the north of England including; An Agency called England, B&W Studio, Brahm, Cool Pink, Elmwood, Iris Associates and Sense Internet.
The annual Sh! Awards, now in their sixth year, were set up by Brahm, the largest independent communications agency outside of London based in Headingley, Leeds, in 2003 in memory of Stuart Hocknell. Stuart was a much loved member of the Brahm design team who tragically died of meningitis at just 28 years of age. He was a great supporter of young designers and was always keen to promote links with colleges and universities – providing talented newcomers with a leg-up into the industry. Creating an annual student award scheme seemed the perfect way to remember him. The other key aim of the Sh! Awards is to raise much needed funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation.
Brahm will be hosting the awards ceremony at their offices in Leeds on Thursday 19th June, when the finalists work will be on show to the general public and the prize winners will be announced.
The Sh! Awards has been generously sponsored and supported by a number of Yorkshire based organisations including printers Evolution Print and Imageco, recruitment agencies Orchard Recuitment and Purple, exhibition contractors DMN and bar and restaurant operator Arc Inspirations.
The creative for this years' awards was developed by Natalie Verrey, junior designer at Brahm and previous finalist of the Sh! Awards.
The prizes:
There are three levels of prizes in the three categories of design, digital and advertising:
• Three winners will each receive £500
• Juicy prizes for all second and third prize winners
• One finalist will receive a six month paid work placement at Brahm
And importantly, all of the finalists will have the undivided attention of some of the most respected (and influential) creative figures in the north of England – an opportunity not to be missed!
How to enter:
The Sh! Awards are open to students due to graduate with a HND or degree in 2008 from a Yorkshire college or university. There are three categories this year: design, digital and advertising. Entry details and further information can be found online at www.brahm.com/sh. There is no charge for entry to the awards - the deadline for entries is Friday 30th May.
Julie Hanson, joint managing director at Brahm said, “The Sh! Awards are an important part of the Brahm culture and after 6 yrs we are proud that this continues to be a fitting tribute to Stuart, an inspired young designer. Over the years we have been fortunate enough to have been supported by some of the best design consultancies in the North of England and through this event have managed to meet and encourage some fresh new talent. Consequently, the party and exhibition has grown into one of the main events in the design calendar”.
